Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses light waves to generate detailed images of the internal structures of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve.

OCT works by emitting a beam of light that is split into two beams. One beam is directed towards the eye and the other is directed towards a reference mirror. The light that is reflected back from the eye and the reference mirror is then combined and analyzed by a computer to create a highly detailed image of the internal structures of the eye.

OCT allows doctors to visualize the layers of the retina and detect subtle changes in thickness that may be indicative of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. It is also used to monitor the progression of these conditions over time and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.

OCT is a painless, non-invasive procedure that typically takes only a few minutes to perform. It does not require any contact with the eye, and there are no known risks or side effects associated with the procedure. The images generated by OCT are highly detailed and can be used to guide treatment decisions and monitor changes in the eye over time.
