This paper presents evidence supporting the effectiveness of cryotherapy in alleviating chronic pain caused by various chronic diseases. Cryotherapy works by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, edema, and nerve conduction velocity in pain fibers, resulting in decreased pain intensity and improved functionality. For patients with rheumatic diseases such as gouty arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, whole-body cryotherapy, especially at temperatures below −110 °C, has shown promising results in reducing both pain and disease activity. The review also highlights the effectiveness of cryotherapy in managing chronic pain for conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic venous disease, and multiple sclerosis. Studies on fibromyalgia consistently suggest that both local and whole-body cryotherapy provide significant pain relief.
